Robyn Rihanna Fenty best known as the Barbadian beauty, singer/songwriter and aspiring actress, always had a love of makeup from a young age. 2 years in the making, she decided to collaborate with Kendo best known for Marc Jacobs Makeup and decided to call the range Fenty Beauty.
Fenty Beauty has been gathering hype amongst makeup lovers and those within the industry for some time.
I was lucky enough to shop on the day of the launch at Harvey Nichols arriving 8am and small queue was forming. On my way up from the tube this was my view from the underground.
They want all out and even changed the underground sign from Knightsbridge for the morning to Fenty Beauty.
On arrival of the launch it was a rainy early morning start and we were treated to Rihanna drinks and snacks as well as a given a Fenty branded umbrella to shield us from the rain.
Beauty VIP bloggers were given a hour start ahead of us to check out the brand, each receiving a small exclusive goodie bag with a Killawatt and a Shimmerstick. Although I was still lucky enough to get a drawstring Fenty Bag with purchase.
I discussed the excitement about the brand amongst the eager die hard makeup junkies after looking at the powerful window display of products of what to look at first, almost everyone agreed that Foundation was the number one thing to look at. Each window displayed all the products available to purchase and it was a first look.
Rihanna has decided to come out with 40 different foundation shades. Now that is a way to launch a new makeup range. Her focus is clearly on the base side of makeup and how the skin looks, which as a makeup artist I agree is crucial, great skin equals great makeup finish.
Amongst an eager group of 20 or so people we waited to be ushered into a smaller queue inside which led to the main counter, placed next to Stila and Surratt Beauty, I believe from memory the old Clarins counter.
I was approached by a Fenty sales assistant who was happy to colour match me, she picked 3 shades and after removing my makeup swiped them on the side of my cheek. The colour that blended into my skin tone most naturally turned out to be 310.
She bought out a colour wheel and I bought the colours that matched with the foundation. I found this really helpful being such a new range and great cheat sheet and a good place to start.
All these products are available to buy only at Harvey Nichols in UK, in store on online. Or from the Rihanna beauty website or Sephora but you will be charged for possible export fees. All of her packaging is recyclable and not tested on animals, made in the US/China/Italy and Canada and distributed by Kendo San Francisco.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filter Instant Retouch Primer – Soft Matte– Smooth, pore-diffusing finish. Extended Makeup Wear.
Coming in a sleek glass container with a plastic baby pink top and in a baby pink container with Fenty Beauty wording. This has a creamy pink texture with a 12 month shelf life, and is priced at £24 pounds which for a primer is a little on the pricey side, considering the foundation is 2 pounds more at £26 pounds, but I think is pretty reasonable for the amount of product you are getting which is 32ML/1.08 FL. OZ. and the primer and foundation do compliment each other very well. I’d say it would suit normal, combination and oily skin, less for Dry skin due to its soft matt consistency.
After trying this a few times I have found it gives my skin a nice soft matte finish before I apply my foundation, bearing in mind I have combination skin. I think it complements the foundation nicely and gives it a nice base. I like the packaging, its quite slim and fits nicely in a makeup bag.
Do I think its essential? I think if you have the extra cash and you like a smooth finish then get this worth getting, but I think you can still buy the foundation on its own and get a good finish.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filter Soft Matte Longer Foundation Medium to Full Coverage for All. Longer. Light as Air.
This comes in a dark graffiti box with a baby pink cardboard insert. It comes in a sleek glass container with a plastic white top and in the shade you have selected with Fenty Beauty wording on the bottle. Its in a liquid like to a soft matte finish and would suit normal, combination to Oily skin. It retails for £26 pounds and comes in 40 Different foundation colours with a shelf life of 12 month with a size of – 32ML/1.08 FL. OZ
After trying this a few times alongside the primer I love it, as I have combination skin it gives a soft medium to full coverage as described and my skin looks flawless. I like the packaging, its quite slim and fits nicely in a makeup bag. Shake well before use.
This has had mixed reviews with some people saying that is oxidises but I haven’t found this has happened to me at all, maybe the primer has helped to stop this but this has been a favourite of mine. I love the way it makes my skin looks, when photographed. Shake well before use, the foundation dries up quite quickly on contact with skin so you have to apply it quickly as it dries to a soft matte.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna 110 Full Bodied Foundation Brush Full, Firm. Air-touched Full Coverage.
This is meant to be used for the primer and foundation. This baby pink brush £26 is pretty dense full and firm and works really well with the primer and the foundation. It gives a smooth finish. I personally like it as it works with the texture of the primer and foundation well although I would say you could probably get just as great finish with beauty blender or any foundation brush you currently have.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick -Highlight, Blush, & Enhance. Longer, Light-As-Air Layering.
The actual Stix are MAGENTISED thats right, they all stick together in a octagon shape, no matter how many you have, its the most imaginative packaging I’ve seen in a long time, its practical and takes up less space in the makeup bag. After a bit of use I’ve noticed sometimes they do come out of the packaging but you can just push it back in. Its a shimmer to powder formula which I really like and it works with the foundation well. With a 12 month shelf life in a Size – 7.10g/0.25 OZ. you do get value for money at £21.00 each as there us a lot of product and its multi purpose you will get a lot of use out of it. The colours available are really varied too with Chilli Mango, Yacht Life, Sinamon, Trippin, Starstruck, Blonde, Confetti, Unicorn, Ridiiic and Rum.
These are all the colours available below, what I love about these are how multi purpose they are you can use them on your face, depending on your skin tone, as a highlighter, blush, eyeshadow and lipstick!
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Match Stix Matte Skinstick -Conceal, Correct & Contour.
These 3 colours match my skin tone Truffle, Sand, Wheat (I have) but there are so many others to choose from including Espresso. With a matte finish this has a 12 month shelf life in comes in a Size – 7.10g/0.25 OZ. at £21.00.
These again you use as a multi purpose tool as a concealer under the eyes or on blemishes, and as a contour on your cheeks, Rihanna’s make up artist has used espresso as a lip colour, I tried it with Truffle and it works as a really lovely matt nude.
I would say the matt consistency works well with the foundation, if you worry about dragging some of the foundation then I would rub it on your hand instead of using it directly from the tube. But i’d say for dry skin it may be too dry for under the eye.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna 150 Portable Contour & Concealer Brush Designed for use with magnetized Match Stix – Precise, effortless sculpting Magnetized and always on standby.
I’ve really liked this so far, I have used this with truffle to as a contour and it blends really well to give a natural finish. You can also use with your concealer to blend, I tend to use my fingers but as this is small it gets into the little spaces under your eye well. Its portable too so you can keep in your makeup bag. Price is £19.00
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna 140 Portable Highlighter Brush Designed for use with magnetized Match Stix – Angled for the perfect sweep. Magnetized and always on standby.
This is portable and again great for using as a touch up with your highlighter. Priced at £19.00
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo & Klllawatt Freestyle Highlighter For Cheeks, eyes, or anywhere you want to glow. Creamy, Long-Lasting. Endless Ways to Glow
I think these highlighters are amazing they leave such a beautiful glow, and are really complimentary to the skin. On the left side is a softer glow in the duo’s and on the right side you can really shine bright like a diamond (excuse the pun). Trophy wife has the kind of glow that would suit mainly dark skintones. Its so stunning but can be used as eyeshadow as well as highlighter, in fact all of these highlighters can we be used as a blush or eyeshadow – no rules! With a shelf life of 9 months and at £26.00 I’d say it would suit all skin types, it comes in a size – 2×3.5g/2×0.12 OZ. The come in the colours including Mean Money/Hustla Baby, Ginger Binge/Moscow Mule, Girl Next Door/Chic Phreak and Trophy Wife.
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna 120 Cheek-Hugging Highlight Brush – Custom Cheek-Hugging Shape. Effortless Glow.
I absolutely love this brush, this really hugs the top of your cheeks and works amazingly well for highlighting. It picks up powder really well and you can direct it in the area you would like the highlight evenly. I particularly like the dip, and I don’t think there is anything out there at the moment that is a similar shape. Priced at £24.00
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Invisimatte Blotting Powder Universal
Pair with magnetised Portable Touch Up Brush – Instant Refresh, On-the-Go Filter effect
This gives a matte finish on the go. It has a 12 month shelf life. I’ve taken this out with a few times now and used it as a finishing product to take away the shine as I have combination skin and I really like this. Price is £24.00
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna 130 Portable Touch up Brush Pair with magnetised invisimatte Blotting powder Instant Filter effect, Magnetized and always on standby.
This clips in with a magnet to the blotting powder. Such a clever idea, its great to travel with picks up enough product. This is £19.00
Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Fenty Glow Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer – Addictive Shine, Nourishing wear. Universal finishing touch.
What a clever idea, a lipgloss that is a universal colour. OMG this is such a beautiful colour, it gives a beautiful glow, its size is 9ml/0.30 FL. OZ. and it lasts a while. Anyone can wear this as its sheer and the texture is soft not sticky and there is a subtle sweet smell but its not overpowering. Price is £16.00
This is me with the primer and foundation and my skin has never looked better.
My overall verdict on this range, is I think its a breath of fresh air to the makeup industry, the pricing is mid range and affordable and foundation range is so varied that its been a game changer within the industry. I think the key products to try initially would be the foundation, the primer, the shimmer sticks and matt sticks, the highlighters and the Gloss! I love all the names she has given to the products and she has clearly had major involvement, packaging all works well together and the magnets are so clever.
